Czech Consulate opens in Peterborough Paul Bristow
The Honorary Czech Consulate has opened in Peterborough, to be located at the COMPAS Charity building on Fitzwilliam Street, and will provide a wide range of consular services to Czech countryman.
His Excellency Libor Sečka, Czech Ambassador to the Court of St. James’s was present at the opening in Peterborough on Friday.
Community leader Petr Torak has played a vital role in bringing this to the city.
The ambassador tweeted about the consulate and said: “Delighted to open today new Honorary Consulate in #Peterborough together with Paul Bristow, Conservative MP and Petr Torák OBE, who is the first Honorary Consul of the Roma origin in the world. He will provide consular services.”
Mr Torak, who is a popular figure among the city’s Czech and Slovak communities, has been working on this project for a few years and described it as ‘a dream come true’.
Speaking to Peterborough Matters, Petr said: “I have been working on this since 2016, 2017. It’s a very positive move for the city and the people from these communities.
“It was opened by his Excellency Libor Sečka and is now up and running at the Compas building on Fitzwilliam Street.
“It’s the second one in the city after an Italian Consulate. This is the first Czech Honorary Consulate in the country, and it will be great to foster relations between the countries and strengthen the ties.
“It’s going to be a massive help for the communities and families and help them save money and time on travel to London. They are very positive about it.
Peterborough MP Paul Bristow welcomed the news and said: “His excellency said it was a big day for Czech Republic, but also, for Peterborough.
“I am immensely proud that an Honorary consulate for Czech and Slovak population has opened in the city.
“I want to congratulate Petr Torak for his relentless work on behalf of not only the Czech communities at Compas but also for also for everyone who required support in pandemic and before.
“We come in different shapes and sizes, diff backgrounds, follow diff religions, speak diff languages. But when it matters Peterborough comes together.”
